Working Moms
The Working Mom's Resource

Blogging

Welcome to Working Mommies.  Once we have some of the formatting down, I will be posting about resources for working moms.  We will also have forums dedicated to the questions and solutions that working moms need.

While there are plenty of mom resources out there, sometimes they are geared toward the needs of Stay-at-home moms.  I have absolute respect and admiration for those who stay home with their children, but for many of us, we either must work, or simply choose to work.

I am also looking for other mommies who would like to blog on this site.  If you want to apply, please send an email to liz at workingmommies dot org.

While we begin this journey, I welcome topic suggestions and information and resources anyone wishes to share.

Topic suggestion:

Breastfeeding as a working mommy.  I have just recently left the workforce, and this was a huge concern to me after having each of my children.  How to pump, where to pump, my lactation rights… A lot of working women aren’t able to continue breastfeeding (or choose not to start in the first place) because of the horrific logistics of combining breastfeeding with their careers.

Shana,

Fantastic idea.. in fact, I think I will make it a catagory.  I do not have experience with breastfeeding at work, but I know it is a major concern.  I hope to find a blogger who has this experience to write about this topic.  I know this will be an important subject.

When I returned to work, I was still nursing. Fortunately, the company I worked with provided an “area” for pumping--I like to call it the Pump Room.
The Pump Room was really the server and security room. Every time I had to pump, I had to ask the receptionist to page Office Services and then wait for them come down and unlock the room for me.
The room itself was comfortable enough: they provided a couch. More than once, I interrupted a midday nap of one of the mailroom guys.
The larger issue for me, was finding the TIME to pump. I was on an every-three-hours schedule, but I also had tight deadlines to meet and more often than not, my pumping time was pushed off because of a last minute team meeting or a project being pushed through.

Another topic suggestion:

FMLA and Disability coverage.

I know we’ve both had some less than wonderful experiences--and it seems every working mom I know was nickled and dimed and minutes and seconds of her leave counted. This might be an interesting forum--and resource.

I definitely want to cover FMLA/Disability Coverage/Maternity Leave issues.  I was thinking last night about a post on that.  Maybe I’ll do one tonight after work.

Lizzie, what a totally awesome idea. I can’t wait to see how this grows!

Hey!
Great idea for a blog! I wouldn’t mind helping to contribute. My only concern, is this going to be an American-only site? (Not that it’s a concern, it’s your site) but often governmental regs and the ‘national daycare database’ wouldn’t apply to your friends North of the border.
Cheers,
Megan

Actually Megan I would LOVE international input!!!!  While laws and regulations may differ, I think there are also many similarities, and there are working moms all over the world.  I would welcome your contributions.
